Transcona wins thriller verses Midget Raiders

Story Image

September 30, 2006
TRANSCONA - On a beautiful autumn day, the Midget Raiders were on the road for a game against the Nationals in Transcona. What a difference a week makes! Last week, the Raiders seemed slow and out of sync, but today the offense played with a jump in their step and a real sense of urgency. Quarterback Braeden Martens (19) played a great game, connecting on passes to a variety of receivers, and also scrambling for critical yardage. Receiver Nick Watchorn (28) also stood out, with three touchdown receptions for the Raiders. With less than a minute remaining in the game, the Raiders trailed by 2 points. They had a couple of good chances to steal a win, but unfortunately they ran out of time. Transcona took the victory by a final score of 34-32. One referee was overheard saying that in his 10 years as a football official, this was one of the best games he had ever seen. If you missed this game, you won't want to miss the rematch, as these same two teams will square off on a Thanksgiving Day matchup in Steinbach.

Midget Raiders lose rematch against the Rods

September 23, 2006
ST JAMES - It felt like a long game today in St James, especially as the referees were intent on throwing penalty flags on what seemed like nearly every play of the game. Many of them (including two "unsportsman-like conduct" penalties against the Rod's coaches) went in favour of the Raiders, however they just couldn't seem to take advantage of the opportunities that were presented to them. For the most part, the Raiders defense played pretty good football. But with the Raiders offense struggling for yardage, the Rods took the game by a final score of 21-9.

Bantam Raiders trampled by Transcona

Story Image

September 16, 2006
TRANSCONA - It seemed like a sleepy Saturday afternoon for the Bantam Raiders, as they just couldn't get things moving against a focused Transcona Nationals team. The game quickly slipped out of reach, as the Nationals posted 4 touchdowns onto the scoreboard before the Raiders were able to respond with a major of their own. In the end, the Nationals cruised to an easy 46-6 win. Raiders receiver Jonathan Wiebe (28) was injured (broken foot) when he was tackled after catching a long pass in the 2nd quarter. The Raiders will try to rebound next week, as they host the Eastside Eagles in Steinbach on Saturday.

The final score was 20-12 for the North Winnipeg Nomads West. The Raiders defense held the score down to 12-12 with the ball being at their own end for most of the game, however the Nomads later capitalized on a Raiders fumble, retrieving the ball in the endzone for a touchdown and the win. STEINBACH - The Bantam Raiders wore their new jerseys for the first time today, as they met the Greendell Falcons in Steinbach on Saturday afternoon. Things got off to a shakey start for the Raiders, as the Falcons managed to return the opening kick-off for a touchdown. The Raiders recovered quickly and drove the ball down the field to score a touchdown of their own on a beautiful throw by the Raiders quarterback. Unfortunately, that was the last time the Raiders would see points added to their side of the scoreboard. The Falcons dominated the rest of the game, scoring 51 unanswered points as they cruised to a 57-8 victory. The loss is the third in a row for the Bantam Raiders who fall to 1-3 for the season.

Peewee Raiders trampled by Mustangs

Story Image

September 2, 2006
STEINBACH - For the second week in a row, the Peewee Raiders were held scoreless, losing today to the strong St Vital Mustangs White team. (Oddly enough, the so-called Mustangs White team actually wears black jerseys!) At half-time, the score was 6-0 for St Vital, but the Mustangs then took advantage of a number of Raiders turnovers and pulled away in the second half. The final score was 20-0 for the Mustangs.
